Because Durham is a university town, there are many opportunities to participate in cultural, sports, and social events locally. In addition, our proximity to Portsmouth, Portland, Boston, Concord and other tourist attractions make this a culturally rich location. Many of the residents in Fitts Farm participate in the Active Retirement Association which meets in Durham.
However, residents have also begun many social traditions including: a regular breakfast group that eats downtown once a month; a friendly, but competitive, croquet group that meets once a week in the summer; two work days a year which are followed by pot luck lunches; a fall foliage walk; a holiday dinner; and other events. The community garden has involved not only the gardeners, but residents who like to come and check on the progress of the plants and just enjoy watching others garden (and hopefully share their bounty).
